326 March Statement of Taiwan Democratic Alliance for Peace

Despite Taiwan’s objection and concerns from all over the world, China’s National People’s Congress passed the so-called “Anti-secession Law” on March 14, 2005. The legislation resorts to non-peaceful measures to resolve the cross-strait dispute. This law will unilaterally change the status quo in the Taiwan Strait, threaten the democratic developments of Taiwan, and endanger the rights of the people of Taiwan in making free choices about Taiwan’s future.

In response to China’s unjustifiable legislation, we would like to make clear that Taiwan is a democratic country with peace-loving people. Taiwan will not recognize China’s legislation and its unilateral claim of sovereignty over Taiwan. Nor will we accept an authoritarian China that, with 706 missiles directed against Taiwan, continue to find excuses to provoke conflicts across the Taiwan Strait, destroy peace and stability, and escalate tensions in the Asia-Pacific region.

Taiwan’s democratic achievements have made the country a remarkable model in Asia. However, the passage of the Chinese so-called ‘Anti-secession Law’ has recently become the focus and discussion of international politics. We condemn Beijing for taking a unilateral movement by passing the so-called ‘Anti-secession Law’, which attempts to give China a legitimate reason to use violence against Taiwan in the future. We do not accept China’s intentions of using non-peaceful measures to resolve the cross strait issue.

There will be more than 1 million Taiwanese people participating in the march on March 26, 2005. The march is designed as a peaceful rally and a democratic festival. The people of Taiwan strongly oppose the passage of the so-called ‘Anti-secession Law’ and will make their voices heard by the rest of the world. The principles of ‘protecting democracy, loving peace, and defending Taiwan’ centralize the purposes of the holding such an event. With love and solidarity, many social organizations have decided to join the 326 March, regardless of gender or ethnic backgrounds. Therefore, we hope that democratic societies will continue to support Taiwan’s democracy and condemn China’s authoritarian regime for a secure Asia and for cross-strait regional peace.
