Democratic Progressive Party Secretary-General Joseph Wu today expressed his sincere appreciation to the U.S. House of Representatives for its unanimous support for Taiwan to be granted observer status in INTERPOL. In particular Secretary-General Wu expressed his thanks to Representative Matt Salmon (AZ-R) Chairman of the Subcommittee on Asia and the Pacific for introducing the bill and ensuring its bipartisan passage through the House on November 2.
He referred to Rep. Salmon’s remarks in April that: “Taiwan’s observer status would promote stability and security in the Asia Pacific region and assist Taiwan in protecting the safety of its citizens by combatting criminal activity through access to INTERPOL’s global police communications systems.
He added that the DPP believes that Taiwan’s participation in INTERPOL would strengthen regional crime-fighting efforts by allowing Taiwan to both contribute and benefit from INTERPOL’s comprehensive information networks. He said that the DPP looks forward to working with the U.S. to promote Taiwan’s meaningful participation on a bipartisan basis in Taiwan.
