The Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) strongly condemns China's military provocations through the “Joint Sword-2024B” military exercises. Such unreasonable intimidation threatens peace and stability in the Taiwan Strait and the broader region while disregarding the Taiwanese people’s pursuit of democracy, freedom, peace, and prosperity. The real stubbornness lies in China’s continued obstinate pursuit of military objectives.
The DPP emphasized that President Lai Ching-te extended goodwill to China in his National Day address, which was widely recognized by the international community as “confident, firm, and steadfast,” with the U.S. government clearly stating that the PRC has no reason to be provocative. Unfortunately, China has time and again maliciously distorted President Lai's remarks, disregarded concerns from the international community, violated the principles of peace and security enshrined in the United Nations Charter, and endangered the safety of Taiwan’s 23.5 million people. The PRC insisted on taking the most provocative and belligerent actions to undermine the peace and stability in the Taiwan Strait and the Indo-Pacific region, seeking to change the status quo and international norms through hegemonic military force.
The DPP further stated that, regardless of the pressure China exerts, its tactics will never gain acceptance from the Taiwanese people and will not change the status quo, in which both sides of the Taiwan Strait are not subordinate to each other. In the face of serious military intimidation, the people of Taiwan will not yield but will become more united in defending their national sovereignty, democracy, and freedom. The DPP strongly urges the PRC government to acknowledge the existence of the ROC Taiwan, recognize the status quo in which both sides of the Taiwan Strait are not subordinate to each other, cease its unjustified military provocations, and shoulder responsibility for maintaining peace and stability across the Taiwan Strait and in the region.
