The DPP expresses deep sorrow and regret over the KMT and TPP joining forces to forcibly pass their trio of political chaos bills through the tyranny of the majority. The DPP strongly condemns the absurd actions of the KMT and TPP, which blatantly betray democratic values, as well as KMT Chair Eric Chu and Caucus Convener Fu Kun-chi, whose actions directly led to this outcome.
During the previous legislative session, a proposed bill aimed at expanding parliamentary power was recently declared unconstitutional by the Constitutional Court, highlighting the grave errors committed by the KMT and TPP from the beginning. Despite this, and following Fu Kun-chi’s return from Hong Kong, the two parties resorted to the same old tactics. They forcibly passed amendments to the: Public Officials Election and Recall Act, Constitutional Court Procedure Act, and Act Governing the Allocation of Government Revenues and Expenditures today (December 21). These laws not only strip the public of their fundamental rights but also paralyze the oversight purview of the Constitutional Court and drain the central government’s finances. The KMT and TPP, in pursuit of their partisan interests, have blocked the DPP from governing effectively.
This all began on Monday, December 16, when KMT lawmakers, with malicious intent, physically blocked DPP legislators from entering committee meetings, preventing them from participating in legislative sessions. This violent act deprived DPP legislators of their ability to perform their official duties and flagrantly violated procedural norms. Furthermore, the Public Officials Election and Recall Act amendment was forced through the committee in just one minute without any discussion. The KMT has functionally instituted “parliamentary martial law” in the Legislative Yuan.
Today, the KMT and TPP stubbornly ignored widespread public outrage and violated democratic procedures. They trampled on the spirit of the legislative branch and forcibly passed three highly controversial bills. Their lawless attitude casts a dark shadow over Taiwanese democracy.
Furthermore, the DPP strongly condemns the use of violence by KMT and TPP legislators during procedural disputes in the legislature. In today’s session, there were once again scenes of shoving, clashes, and rough treatment of DPP legislators. Such acts of violence, by publicly restricting the personal freedom of legislators, not only humiliate the dignity of the legislature but also cause serious harm to democratic values. This crude and shameless behavior fully exposes the KMT and TPP’s disregard for the core values of democracy.
At this critical juncture, we call upon all citizens to stand up to jointly condemn the KMT and TPP, and reject their unconstitutional, politically destructive actions. Taiwan’s democracy was hard-earned and must not be allowed to crumble in front of our own eyes. We believe the power of rational and steadfast civic strength will become the greatest pillar in the defense of Taiwanese democracy.
As a party committed to safeguarding Taiwan’s democracy, the DPP will take all possible measures of legal recourse to prevent the irreversible harm caused by the trio of political chaos bills, which effectively rips up the constitution. We must defend our precious democratic achievements alongside all those concerned about Taiwan’s democracy. We will protect democracy and uphold the rule of law in Taiwan with action.
