DPP Spokesperson Peifen Hsieh today(15th) welcomed the Chair of the US Senate Foreign Relations Subcommittee on East Asia, the Pacific, and International Cybersecurity Policy, Ed Markey (D-MA), and his delegation to Taiwan. The DPP expressed a sincere welcome to the US Congress for organizing a delegation to Taiwan in less than two weeks following Speaker Pelosi's visit and hopes to utilize this opportunity to thank the US Senate and the House of Representatives for their strong bipartisan support for Taiwan.
Other than Chair Ed Markey, this delegation also consists of Representatives John Garamendi (D-CA), Alan Lowenthal (D-CA), Don Beyer (D-VA), and Aumua Amata Coleman Radewagen (R-AS). Peifen Hsieh stated that when Ed Markey was in the House of Representatives in 1979, he voted in favor of the Taiwan Relations Act. Upon being elected to the Senate, he joined the Senate Taiwan Caucus. Since becoming the Chair of the East Asia, the Pacific, and International Cybersecurity Policy Subcommittee of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee, he has more actively promoted pro-Taiwan acts and recently proposed legislation such as the Taiwan ASSURE Act and the Taiwan Fellowship Act. As such, the DPP would like to use this visit to sincerely thank Chair Markey, a good friend who has supported Taiwan for a long time.
Peifen Hsieh further stated that China used Pelosi’s visit a few days ago as an excuse to carry out live-fire military exercises, further escalating tensions in the Taiwan Strait and the region, giving rise to international condemnation. During this occasion, this congressional delegation’s visit to Taiwan, consisting of members stretching across the House and the Senate coming from important committees such as Foreign Affairs, Armed Services, and the Committee on the Budget, expresses its support for Taiwan with practical actions; and also demonstrates the emergence of normal relations between Taiwan and other democratic countries. The DPP expects that alongside the hard work of Taiwan, America, and other democratic allies, the Taiwan Strait can be safeguarded and the stability of peace maintained.
