In response to the recent visit of U.S. Senator Tammy Duckworth, D-IL, DPP Spokesperson Peifen Hsieh affirmed today that the DPP sincerely welcomes Senator Duckworth and her delegation. The DPP believes that this second visit from the delegation demonstrates the closeness of Taiwan-U.S. relations.
Spokesperson Hsieh added that, in June 2021, when the outlook of the COVID-19 pandemic in Taiwan was grim, Senator Duckworth, Senator Dan Sullivan, R-AK, and Senator Chris Coons, D-DE, arrived in Taiwan via military aircraft to announce the U.S. donation of vaccines to the country. During this visit, Senator Duckworth emphasized U.S. support of Taiwan: “The U.S. will not let Taiwan stand alone.” This timely assistance and unwavering friendship displayed by the U.S. delegation is cherished by the Taiwanese people.
Spokesperson Hsieh stated that Senator Duckworth, in her capacity as a member of the Senate Taiwan Caucus, is a long-time supporter of the country. For instance, in July 2021, Senator Duckworth sponsored the Taiwan Partnership Act, which was later incorporated into the National Defense Authorization Act (NDAA) of 2022. In addition, the Senator sponsored the Strengthen Taiwan’s Security Act of 2022 last week. In response to Senator Duckworth’s support of Taiwan, the DPP conveys its utmost gratitude.
Spokesperson Hsieh further stated that, regarding this second visit of Senator Duckworth and her delegation, the DPP welcomes the delegation and is pleased they will visit for a longer duration than last time. The DPP believes that this longer visit will enable the delegation to view Taiwan’s democracy, freedom, and support for human rights with new eyes and that the delegation’s visit will strengthen Taiwan-U.S. friendship.
