In response to the recent visit of U.S. Senator Lindsey Graham, R-SC, and his delegation to Taiwan, DPP Spokesperson Peifen Hsieh emphasized the significance of the visit and its demonstration of U.S. support for Taiwan. The DPP cordially welcomes the delegation of six U.S. lawmakers and looks forward to strengthening Taiwan-U.S. ties.
Spokesperson Hsieh added that this most recent delegation comprises Republican and Democratic Congress members. Republican Senator Graham is the leader of the delegation and the Ranking Member on the Senate Committee on the Budget. He is joined by Democratic Senator Robert Menendez, D-NJ, who serves as chairman of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee. Attendee Richard Burr, R-NC, is the Ranking Republican member of the Senate Health, Education, Labor, and Pensions Committee. Robert Portman, R-OH, is the Ranking Republican member of the Senate Committee on Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs. Republican Senators Ben Sasse, R-NE, and Ronny Jackson, R-TX, also joined the delegation. Their areas of expertise include foreign affairs, homeland security, and various domestic issues. This variety of professional intellect suggests the expansive nature of Taiwan-U.S. ties and the bright future of friendship between the two countries.
The DPP once again thanks Senators Graham and Menendez for their proposed 2019 Asia Reassurance Initiative Act. The DPP is grateful for the Act’s reaffirmation of U.S. commitment to Taiwan’s security and the support of the visiting delegation. This delegation visit enables U.S. lawmakers to witness first-hand Taiwan’s freedom, democracy, and support for human rights. Particularly in light of recent events in Ukraine, the delegation visit reveals the importance of maintaining peace and stability in the Taiwan region.
Spokesperson Hsieh underscored that the U.S. Congress had demonstrated strong support for Taiwan over the past several decades. As in-person diplomacy and international exchanges resume, the DPP welcomes the arrival of the first U.S. Congressional delegation of the year. In addition, the DPP looks forward to future opportunities for the furthering of Taiwan-U.S. ties.
