The Democratic Progressive Party expressed its praise today (11) of the joint statement issued by the Legislative Yuan’s ruling and opposition parties condemning the CCP’s military exercises around Taiwan. The DPP is glad to see that cross-party support is possible when it comes to defending sovereignty and national interests, which shows the CCP the unity and tenacity of Taiwanese society, and that Taiwan is resolute and will not give in easily. Furthermore, we wish to once again strongly denounce the CCP’s irrational and unwarranted conduct, which has shattered peace and stability in the Taiwan Strait and region as a whole. This not only does nothing to improve cross-strait relations, but also makes clear to the world the CCP’s authoritarian essence.
The DPP expresses its thanks and commendation of the Legislative Yuan’s joint statement on “Condemning the CCP’s Damaging of the Cross-Strait Situation and International Order.” When the CCP escalates its coercive actions, what Taiwan needs most is to display an attitude of cross-party unity, and to resolutely defend Taiwan’s sovereignty and national interests, freedom, democracy, and way of life, showing that Taiwan will not give in under pressure.
The DPP points out that President Tsai Ing-wen represents Taiwan to the world, expresses Taiwan’s shared democratic values with the international community, deepens friendships with allies, and represents the shared expectations of the Taiwanese people. Despite having no basis on which to stand, the CCP authorities still insisted on carrying out the so-called “Encircling Taiwan” military exercises, pointlessly undermining the status quo in the Taiwan Strait, and disrupting global order. This threatening of global and regional peace and stability not only strengthens the international community’s support for Taiwan, but also once more highlights the nature of the CCP’s authoritarian expansion.
The DPP emphasizes that no matter what means are used to try and threaten and coerce Taiwan, in no way will Taiwan bow to totalitarianism. The DPP calls on the CCP authorities to see the objective fact that the R.O.C. (Taiwan) and PRC are not subordinate to each other, to realize the reality of the Taiwanese people’s will and the international perception, and to stop indulging in the fantasy that political, military, or economic threats will stop Taiwan from marching toward the world. Only when the CCP fully appreciates the Taiwanese people’s insistence for freedom, democracy, and sovereignty will positive cross-strait exchanges be able to resume.
