In response to Russia’s violation of the United Nations Charter by using military force to invade Ukraine and occupy its territory, DPP Spokesperson Peifen Hsieh stated that freedom and peace are the values democratic countries rally to protect. The DPP opposes any use of armed force in resolving international disputes. We deeply sympathize with the suffering of the people in Ukraine, strongly condemn Russia’s violation and invasion of Ukraine’s sovereignty, and will take action together with other democratic countries.
Spokesperson Hsieh added that the DPP has always been paying close attention to changes in the situation around the Taiwan Strait and the Indo-Pacific region. However, the situation in Taiwan and Ukraine are fundamentally different in terms of geostrategy, geographical environment, and the importance of the international supply chain. Thus, the DPP calls on the public not to overinterpret the impact of the case of Russia and Ukraine on the situation in the Taiwan Strait. At this time, as the government and relevant units work on clarifying misinformation to reassure the public, any cognitive information deliberately causing panic must also be heeded.
In the face of changes in the international situation and the challenges and threats to democracy from authoritarian regimes, Spokesman Hsieh emphasized that there must be closer collaboration between the democratic camps, and unity within Taiwan is even more crucial. Thus, the DPP calls upon the public to support the government’s response to the Russo-Ukrainian War: actions that undermine regional peace and stability should be condemned.
