In response to US Secretary of State Antony Blinken's support of Taiwan to participate in the United Nations (UN) system, DPP Spokesperson Peifen Hsieh expresses her gratitude. The DPP thanks the US for its advocacy. And the Party looks forward to contributing to the global community through participation in the UN and other international organizations.
The Spokesperson stated that Taiwan's democratic rule of law, protection of human rights, advanced high-tech economy, and public health and medical achievements are recognized worldwide. Indeed, during this year's UN General Assembly's general debate, Japan, alongside Taiwan's 14 diplomatic allies, voiced support for the country to join the organization.
Secretary of State Antony Blinken underscored the importance of Taiwan's inclusion in the UN in an October 26 press statement: "Taiwan's meaningful participation in the UN system is not a political issue, but a pragmatic one." In his statement, the Secretary added, "we encourage all UN Member States to join us in supporting Taiwan's robust, meaningful participation throughout the UN system and in the international community." In response, Spokesperson Hsieh confirmed that the consensus among the US, Japan, and many other like-minded countries is to support Taiwan's extensive participation in the international community.
The Spokesperson added that China often cites UNGA Resolution 2758 to block Taiwan's participation in international organizations. Yet, on the eve of the 50th anniversary of the resolution's adoption, Deputy Assistant Secretary of the Bureau of East Asian and Pacific Affairs Rick Waters openly criticized the Chinese misuse of the resolution. In addition, many prominent US Congress members have also opposed Chinese manipulation of the resolution and exclusion of Taiwan. The US legislators' advocacy and officials' willingness to protest the Chinese exploitation of UNGA Resolution 2758 demonstrates US support for Taiwan.
Spokesperson Hsieh emphasized that Taiwan's government and civil society have long been committed to participating in international organizations such as the UN. Indeed, Secretary Blinken's official statement of support for Taiwan, and his call for other UN member states to follow suit, demonstrate Taiwan's increasing involvement in international affairs. The DPP thanks Secretary Blinken for his advocacy. The Party also appreciates Taiwan's frontline diplomatic personnel and their efforts to obtain global recognition of the country.
