The French National Assembly's November 29 resolution advocating for Taiwan's inclusion in the international community confirms French support for Taiwan. The resolution supports Taiwan's participation in the following international organizations: the World Health Assembly (WHA), the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO), the International Criminal Police Organization (INTERPOL), and the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC).
Minister of State at the Ministry for Europe and Foreign Affairs Jean-Baptiste Lemoyne recently reaffirmed French support for Taiwan's inclusion in international organizations. In response, DPP Spokesperson Peifen Hsieh expressed her gratitude for France's advocacy of Taiwan.
The Spokesperson recalled that, on May 6, the French Senate also adopted a pro-Taiwan resolution. Following the passage of this legislation, the French National Assembly passed yet another resolution supporting Taiwan. This consecutive passage of legislation sets the record for the first time in half a year that both houses of the French Parliament pass pro-Taiwan resolutions. The National Assembly's resolution is due to Chairman of the Taiwan-France Parliamentary Friendship Group François de Rugy's proposal. The Chairman's proposal received immediate support from seven of France's major political parties and was signed by 183 members of the National Assembly. The resolution recognizes Taiwan's success with epidemic prevention and economic growth. It also highlights the consequences of Taiwan's exclusion from international organizations on the greater global community.
During the French National Assembly discussion of the resolution, Chairman of the Committee on Foreign Affairs Jean-Louis Bourlanges expressed his support for Taiwan. In addition, Assembly member Frédérique Dumas stated: “Je suis Taïwan!” (I am Taiwan!). French Assembly members' support of Taiwan underscores the strength of Taiwan-France friendship and is cherished by the Taiwanese people.
Spokesperson Hsieh added that Taiwan-France relations continue to flourish. Just last month, Chairman of the French Senate's France-Taiwan Friendship Group Alain Richard visited Taiwan. The group's two Vice-Chairpersons, Max Brisson and Else Joseph, also joined the Chairman, along with Olivier Cadic (Deputy Chairman of the French Senate's Foreign Affairs, Defense and Armed Forces Committee) and Judith Bout (Secretary of the Friendship Group). Despite protest from Shaye Lu, the People's Republic of China's Ambassador to France, the delegation demonstrated their support for the Taiwan-France friendship and proceeded with the visit.
The Spokesperson emphasized that the recent exchanges between the two countries represent Taiwan-France's friendship. Indeed, as Taiwan and France share values such as freedom and democracy, close ties between the two countries are expected. The DPP expresses gratitude to the French Parliament for supporting Taiwan's participation in international organizations. Further, the DPP also thanks Taiwan Representative to France Wu Chih-Chung and other frontline diplomatic personnel for their efforts in promoting Taiwan-France friendship.
